CHAPTER EIGHT
"Are you sure he was telling the truth?" Rand's mind raced as he thought through the implications of what Cody just told him. If the message wasn't Adam's, then whose? And why had the kid reacted the way he did?
"I think he was," Cody said. "He seemed relaxed, and he was genuinely puzzled that we thought he'd left that message."
"I thought for sureâ¦" His voice trailed off. "We're going to have to put someone else in Charlie's place at the school, and that won't be easy. But her cover is blown now. As long as she can't return, I might as well replace you, too. I guess I can put Little and Abraham at the high school. They're both new enough to not be well known." Rand pushed his chair back and stood. "Looks like you two get to return to regular duty. But Charlie, keep your rifle with you at all times in case we need you again."
"Yes, sir. If it's all right with you, I'd also like to keep looking through the social media posts and backgrounds on the students and teachers. But I'll need official access."
"I'll get that taken care of." Rand sighed and walked them to the door. "I was really hoping this was over. There are only a few weeks left of the semester before the summer break and Brandy's graduation. But like my granddad used to say, "If wishes were fishes, we'd have 'em fried."
Charlie laughed. "My dad used to say that all the time. Must be a southern thing."
Rand led the way to Linda's office and made the assignment changes. "I'm putting you two here in town for now, in case we need you in a hurry. I know Cody will be glad. That used to be his favorite assignment, back when things were quiet and he got to hang out at the diner or watch traffic at the crossroads."
"Still is my favorite, boss. Thanks."
Rand nodded. "Okay, see you at briefing in the morning. Don't tell anyone else what you told me, okay? I'd like for everyone to think we got the right guy and let their guard down a bit. One, so the stress is off for the kids, and two, so the person who actually left the message will think the heat is off and that we aren't looking for him anymore."
After they left, Rand returned to his office and closed the door. First, he called the principal at the high school. He had to know the truth. Then he called Abraham and Little and told them to be at the station a half-hour early the next morning.
There was one other person he had to tell. It was one call he dreaded having to make. Maddie and Brandy had a special bond, and Maddie would hate having their daughter still in danger.
Hell, he hated the idea, too.

It felt good to be back on the streets. While Charlie had enjoyed her time teaching history, she needed to get back to the routine.
